Finished prelim

Filming this preliminary gave our group a good idea of how exactly we could film our actual thriller project. Our setting was good for our idea and we had the correct props which helped make the prelim .
We used a variety of different shots to help our footage look more intriguing to viewers such as over the shoulder shots for when having the conversation to match cutting when Luke is putting the kettle on . However we think we could have done alot better as some of the shots were a bit shakey and not straight but we think that the use of music helped spice up the prelim making it a success .

Planning-Initial Ideas for Thriller opening

Some ideas we came up with were :

1)
location : London , shop
props : mannequins
A significant amount of people have been reported missing in the last 2 months , without any explanation they all just seem to have vanished.
Soon after , a new store opening is being launched when people start to notice over time that some of the mannequins begin to resemble some of the lost people . Later it is confirmed that in fact they are the remains of the missing people.

2)
Location : london , house
props : fake baby

A couple accidentally uncovers a baby mill as they visit a fertility clinic. They are pursued by the Eastern European gangsters who run the mill. They must choose to take up the gangsters on their offer to sell their baby and then be no longer able to turn them in as they will go to prison themselves or will they choose to give their child away to keep it safe even if they are killed.

3)
Location: outside , alley way
props : Knifes , pens
A kid murderer (around 12-13 yrs.) whose mental abilities are exceptionally well developed and leaves her signature (any symbol) on the victim. Women in these situations can be better and more spooky villains. Could be serial murders.

Practice:PRELIM

Preparation,planning,storyboard

-For our preliminary filming we created a storyboard as an overall template for something we were able to refer back to when filming the final product.

-Our groups idea is quite simple as we were practising and experimenting with the camera while filming our idea, this is so we would have a general idea of how to use different camera shots effectively and will very much contribute to our final thriller opening.

-Our Preliminary idea was a date between a couple who's conversation flows generally, this is so we were able to experiment and focus mainly with over the shoulder shots and close ups of the face.

-Due to the fact that our idea was simple meant we were not having to waste time looking around for props and specific setting as the scene could be created quite easily with the surroundings we have around the college.

Editing of the Prelim

Evaluation of Prelim

For our prelim we thought that one of our strong points were the different angles and camera movements used throughout, we tried to consider different point of views from different angles. however we have learnt that we should not put titles over the faces of the characters as it distracts from the plot. We have also learnt that during the editing process we should make sure the scenes flow, and include more match cuts and dialogue to draw the audience in and make it more intresting. Overall we believe our final prelim opening is average and if added more content to it it could have been better along with the titles added on at different points and not over the characters faces.

RESEARCH-Timline of title sequences

SUPERBAD (2007)
For this excersise we found it difficult to find a programme where we were able to make a timeline which would have enough room for everything we wanted to list and also enough room for further detail, therefore we unfortunately were unable to create a timeline which included all detail and writing we would have liked and wanted.
For the titles of superbad the first thing that appears is the ident in the first 5 seconds, followed by ; actors then casting director the various producers and finally ends with the overall director, this opening title sequence was quite unusual as it only lasted a minute and a half which is particularly short therefore not all titles were shown implying they will be shown in the closing titles.

Generally the order title sequences will appear
Production company
Distribution company
Famous Actors
Film Title
Actors
Casting
Costume
Music Supervisor
Music
Edited
Production Designer
Director of photography
Executive producer
Written by
Director

because the two film openings we chose are particularly short, this means not all titles appeared in the most common order others did, this means that it is more then likely the rest of the titles will appear during the ending credits. however the Ident was always first and the director was nearly always the last thing to appear during the opening credits, films that follow the general title sequence are films such as the taking of Pelham 1 2 3 and Mean girls.

RESEARCH-Safety Tutorial

A few lessons back we were given the chance to use exclusive media equipment. The group was given a camera a tripod and were taught how to attach and remove the camera safely, which particular buttons did and how they were used. We were also taught different aspects like how to zoom and focus, and most importantly which shooting modes fitted best with the set.

From this tutorial we were able to make a successful remake of Reservoir Dogs opening as everything we learnt was applied when shooting this.

RESEARCH-Analysis of students film opening (catechize)

The opening structure to Catechize is quite discrete. Throughout the sequence it contains separate segments which are random and don't contribute to the narrative. I thought this student opening was very similar to 'Se7en' in terms of the editing, lighting and imagery. Overall the opening created large amounts of suspense and tension especially with the different effects of imagery used.

Camera- In terms of camera shots most of them were just

of still images. However the shots that were identifiable
were mostly close ups and a crab shot of some tools. in
general most of the camera shots consist of about 3 seconds.
The shot of this eye adds to the unnerving atmosphere as it
may perceieves the sense of being watched.
Sound- No music is played throughout however
non diegetic sound can be heard through the flicking of
pages along with the heartbeat at the beginning and the

dripping of water, this creates suspension.

The lighting throughout is quite dull and dark which

contributes to overall atmosphere, it gives the
impression of isolation and loneliness.
Props are used such as a clock Polaroid photographs.

In terms of editing it consists of a lot of fast cuts and
flashing imagery this connotes danger and fear.

RESEARCH - Analysis of students film opening (Violet)

From watching all the previous students openings , 'Violet' was the one that stood out to me most. There is a lot of stylised editing involved which helps connote tension and an eerie atmosphere such as it being in black and white in some parts . The title opening used is titles over a blank screen followed by narrative , This was good as the cutting to black screens gives us more suspense to what will be shown when it goes into narrative . The font matches the genre of the film , it also flickers for a frightening atmosphere.

Camera : There are a range of different camera shots used in the opening. Wide shot is used when we are first introduced to the girl , this enables us to have a clear view of her . However we cannot see her face which sets a mysterious Ora.

Tracking into a door is used to illustrate the feeling of us walking into a house

Close up of the girls hand is used to show us there is blood on it which makes the viewer begin to wonder .

There is also an birds eye shot which creates the effect of someone watching over her body, showing vulnerability .

Sound - Non digetic sound is played throughout the opening . It sounds very childlike which in a movie like this would create unnerving atmosphere.

Mise en scene - The girl is in a white night dress which illustrates the innocence of the character .
There is fake blood used to make us think she has really been killed making it more realistic.
The lighting is quite dark showing danger and mystery.

Editing - Throughout the opening there has been many different editing styles , the film has been in black and white from when were taking into the house . while trackking into the door , time lapse has been used. Also the scenes tend to flash .

Remake of arlington road

Arlington road

This is my version of the opening sequence of "Arlington Road". I used final cut pro to put the sequence in order then i added the titles.

Remake of Arlington road

This was our first rough cut of Arlington Road, however we thought initially that the titles were too slow and the colour was too intense for what it was, we then decided to make the colour of the font lighter to give it a softer tone however still adds suspension and mystery.

RESEARCH- Arlington road

This was my final re-edited version of Arlington road

Editing:
This lesson we were introduced to final cut pro which is a programme that allows you to trim, add effects and overall edit something in an easy and capable way that if done correctly can look professional and realistic. The whole class had to re-edit their own versions of the opening 'Arlington Road' this meant we had to position the clips in what we thought worked and cut and trim them the way we wanted. We also learnt  how to add titles, wether they were intercut or superimposed. For my final version i decided to have the titles super imposed as this fit the theme of mystery and suspension the opening presented, unlike for example having titles over a black screen which may be more suitable for a horror opening.

Sound:
We then learnt how to add music and other sound effects such as foley sounds using the programme sound track pro. Foley sounds are sounds that are imposed on to the footage but were made at a different point, for example footsteps in films are most likely foley and the sound is added afterwards to get the pitch and effect more realistic. The whole class experimented with them and personally doing this resulted with me using music for the  opening rather then any foley sounds, the music i used was quite a slow tempo with the sound of various percussions, however it wasn't until after i had uploaded this that i realised the sound did not play and something must have gone wrong technically.

RESEARCH - analysis of student film opening

The paper trail
The first thing you see when the opening starts is the ident of Candi studios. Then you hear what seems to be high strings or synth playing single notes even before the opening starts, this sets extreme tension because it makes the viewer think about what's going to happen next.

Track shot of cardboard box
The first thing we see is a track shot of a cardboard box, this creates a mysterious feeling because the viewer has no information about this box.

The titles then begin to appear in an unusual font which almost looks decomposed. The director comes first followed by the stars.

Shot of characters' silhouette
A character is then introduced using a shot which is facing a window with very bright light coming out of it. This shows the characters silhouette which gives this character an anonymous feel.

The mise en-scene is very plain allowing the viewers' attention to fall on the few objects which are used. These objects are a cardboard
box and paper, referring to the title.

The diegetic sounds that are used are very strange and creepy, they remind me of sounds you would hear in horror movies. These sounds create tension along with the character doing origami because it makes the viewer think that something bad is going to happen.

Analyse to film openings

The Dark Knight

The film starts off showing the ident and no sound, this means the audience don't instantly know what to make of it and get a rough idea of what type of film it's going to be, as in a lot of films, when the ident is produced at the start music is added in the background.

After the ident, the type of opening looks as if it's discrete but a narrative opening is going to follow due to the eary music in the background which suggests something is going to happen. The opening scene to this film is definitely a narrative opening as the audience is introduced to characters and it gets straight into action. The diegetic sound of characters voices, weaponry etc... is very loud which increases the intensity of the opening and gets the audience more into it.

The editing also has an intense effect on the audience as the contrast in slow motion and the fast motion makes the opening scene seem more intriguing and action-packed. Overall the editing is very quick and there is a lot of parallel editing used, as it cuts from the different robbers' jobs throughout the whole scene.

In this opening scene the camera angles are varied as there is a range of different shots mostly including long shots to establish the characters in the frame, medium shots to show characters' body language and also wide shots to establish the location and scenery. What I thought was a great shot was the slow zoom-in on the Jokers mask from 1:20-1:29. I think what also makes this good is the music build-up in this period.

This scene is clearly set in a city as there are high-rised buildings and a lot of people and cars. The props used are mainly weaponry and machinery as it is a bank robbing scene. The robbers also use mass to cover up their faces to avoid being identified. Most of the robbers are dressed smart-casual (shirts, jackets, smart trousers and shoes). Lastly, all the characters body language seems very rushed, the robbers are rushed as they need to rob the bank quickly to avoid getting caught and the innocent people in the bank are very tense as they are under attack from the robbers.

HOLIDAY HOMEWORK - RESEARCH 1 - analyse 2 film openings

Step Brothers

The opening give the viewers a broad image of what the film will be like , the fact that there are two grown men who seem to be acting pretty childish , like playing air guitar and eating nacho's , indicate the film is a comedy.
The opening structure to step brothers would be titles fading in and out over a blank black screen then going into a narrative structure .
Camera -The first shot is a close up of Brennan putting some cheese on some nacho's , this helps us understand the type of guy he is as we see that at someone of his age he is still eating nacho's and cheese .Theres then another close up of Dale picking up some pants and sniffing them . within the first few shots its enabled us to establish the fact its a comedy.
Sound - As the movie beggins , there is some digetic sound of Brennans nacho bag rustling and the microwave beeping . There are people talking having conversations aswell as the tv playing .Then as some non digetic music plays over , the music is loud and has drums and guitar to liven the scene .
Editing - The main editing in this scene is the shot reverse shots as brennan and Dale both have conversations with their parents and also cross cutting when its taking us from Brennan making food to Dale sniffing underwear .There is also shot reverse shot part when Dales father is making a speech and the shot is reversed to Brennans mum showing us shes a distraction to him and something may end up happening. betweem them
Mise en scene - Food , Guitars , tv's . The lighting is not too bright but not dark either .. the way teenagers like it. They are wearing bright clothes indicating they are childish.

Love actually

The titles to love actually is descrete structured , They fade in and out of footage which is not part of the movie but could have something to do with it . The footage as not given to much away.Hugh grants voice over allows the viewers a clear illustration that the film is about love , it is also non digetic sound . The footage is quite bright and generally of happy people meeting again at airports , this gives of a very happy atmosphere suggesting that the film will end happily but then again it has not said anything to indicate it , it just makes the viewer wonder.

RESEARCH- Film audiences

All films that have been made over the years have had an audience, whether it being small, big specific or non-specific. Some types of films appeal to a specific type of audience.

The audiences of thriller films are much more diverse as they are a very unique type of film. I think it really comes down to sub-genre. I think different types of people will like different sub-genres of thriller films. For example people could argue that a woman would be more interested in seeing a more romantic based thriller film and that a man might rather watch a more action and crime based thriller film.

So in conclusion I don't think that thriller films appeal to just one audience as they are a more diverse genre of film which makes their audience more diverse as well.

RESEARCH - structures of a film opening

A film opening is the first scene of a film in which the opening titles are shown to the audience. The titles most commonly include the producers, director and stars. There are 4 main types of film openings:

-Titles over a blank screen
Is when a film opens with a blank screen ,which is usually black, with the opening credits scrolling (or moving with any other effect) through it. It is very commonly used in openings of films. This is seen in many films for example "Donnie Darko".

-Discrete sequence
This is when a montage of random pictures or clips from or relevant to the movie play while the titles roll through, this does not include a narrative opening and therefore doesn't give much of the film away. This can be seen in "Enemy of the state".

-Narrative sequence
This is when the titles are super-imposed or intercut into the opening scene, this usually consists of titles  running throughout the scene or sometimes edited to it looks like the titles are part of the scene like in the film "Panic room".

-Stylised sequence
A stylised sequence usually sees the images and pictures specially edited to fit in with the theme of the movie, this can be used to create great effect. This can be seen in "Mesrine".

RESEARCH- Intertextuality

Intertextuality is the shaping of texts' meanings by other texts. It pretty much means that films have borrowed aspects of other films, and the audience have picked up on this, these are features such as camera angles, editing, sound and most commonly mise en scene.

Intertextuality is used in films older films and films today. For example the films Psycho and Fatal Attraction both have very similar features. Most obviously the mise en scene is very similar, as both films use a knife prop and both are set in a bathroom. Also, another obvious comparison is that one character stabs another. Both films use dramatic music which increases the intensity. A more subtle comparison that is not as easy to pick up on is that both films show close-ups of the womens' faces in the bath. Lastly, there is slow and tense editing at the end of both scenes.

RESEARCH- The structure of thriller openings

There are 3 types basic structures of thriller openings:

Discrete openings- These openings are very unclear and don't really give anything away about the film. These type openings may contain elements which act as indicators towards the plot. An example of a film which uses a discrete opening is Se7en. As showed in the clip, Se7en uses mysterious music and props e.g. books to open the film and doesn't give the films narrative away.

Narrative openings- These are openings which show the first part of the film e.g. introduces characters and could also give the audience and idea to what the plot may be. For example, in Panic Room, after the shots of the buildings along with the credits have been shown, the story of the film actually begins as the characters, location etc have been established. This clip only shows this in the last 5 seconds or so.

Titles over a blank screen- These openings contain stand alone titles that lead into the opening of the film, they are usually on a black screen with white writing. An example of this is Donnie Darko. Donnie Darko has a mysterious opening but before this it has simple credits over a black screen.

RESEARCH - Intertextuality

Intertextuality is the shaping of a texts' meanings by other texts, it essentially means authors and/or movie directors borrowing and transforming features from other authors and movie directors which had used those features in the past. This could include directors using similar camera angles, editing techniques diegetic and non-diegetic sounds and features of mise en-scene.

Intertextuality can be seen in many films of today. Film directors such as Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock have come up with incredible features in films which have been used in many recent films. One example of this is Alfred Hitchcocks "Psycho". This film used many features that had never been seen before and that are still being used today. Adrian Lyne used some of these features in his film "Fatal attraction". In the scene when Dan and Alex are fighting in the bathroom bits from the shower scene in Psycho are used, for example the curtain falling on Dan is similar to Marion pulling the curtain as she falls, also the tap continuing to run is similar to the shower being left running after Marion is killed.

RESEARCH - Film Audiences

Film Audiences
Every film that has ever been made has had an audience that has watched it. In many cases films have been made to appeal to a certain kind of audience.

Thriller film audiences consist of a much wider range of people than other genres such as romantic films or war films in which the audience can be easily divided by gender. This is because thrillers have become on of the most popular movie genres. The main reason for this is because they involve a large range of sub-genres which can appeal to a wider range of people, for example a romantic thriller might appeal to a more feminine audience while an action packed thriller might appeal to a more masculine audience and a psychological thriller might appeal to an older audience.

Another reason for this is because thrillers contain elements of other genres for example there might be a romantic scene in a thriller or there could be occasional bits of comedy.

RESEARCH-analysis of 2 film openings

Superbad-2007

The opening titles to Superbad doesn't meet a specific structure. However the structure that the opening fits mostly with would be titles over a black screen, followed by the narrative opening.
The opening sequence doesn't have anything to do with the narrative apart from the fact the boys are trying to be cool  dancing, and trying to be cool throughout the film, it also lacks sophistication with all the colours used which also reflects the characters in the film.
Although the opening is nearest to titles over a black screen, the titles are in fact coloured throughout along with the background which then change and contrast. This already adds to the film having a fun enjoyable atmosphere.
However the viewer isn't focused on the titles because their is also coloured silhouettes dancing along side the titles which contain so much comedy and personality into simple silhouettes they take the viewers attention, and from this are able to identify the film is a comedy.

The camera movement throughout is stationed in one place, this makes it simple for the viewer to only focus on the imagery shown and not get distracted by other things.
-Throughout the introduction it portrays a 70s feel, this is mainly through the music but also the imagery and editing. All the bright colours used and the fact they flash gives the scene a disco feel, this is then continued by the dancing silhouettes who deliberately dance  badly but it still works as it adds comedy. The music is also very disco like as you can hear brass instruments used aswell as a synthesizer.

Forrest Gump- 1994

Forrest Gumps opening structure is a narrative opening with the titles running throughout. The opening is quite simple yet has some very complex techniques used, the whole opening scene was taken by one shot and features no cuts.
The opening shot begins with a feather floating which already represents innocence and kindness. The camera follows the feather floating in all directions which has no control over its own fate due to the wind, until is rests on Forrests shoe.
This feather may be foreshadowing how Forrests life has been  and how he has floated through it like it was nothing.
It represents life's journey and no matter what it always continues, the feather begins in the sky to symbolise freedom and that their are no limits to where it can take you.
-The lighting looks as if it is natural light on a cloudy dull day.The camera beings with a high view over a town which leads on to a birds eye view of the feather on a gentleman's shoulder. It then tracks in and pans to the left when the feather finally lands on to Forrests shoe. The camera movement is very slow and steady which adds to the feather and Forrest being fragile.
-The music is non diegetic and begins at the very start, it consists of a soft piano and violin which creates a classical tone, and quite a romantic feel. The diegetic sound of traffic and people talking then occurs when the camera  has a bird eye view which adds to the normal feel of everyday life.

RESEARCH-list the conventions of a thriller you have watched

The Departed-2006

The Departed is a thriller I thoroughly enjoy, however is also quite a challenge to grip the storyline.
-Its set in Boston where an undercover cop (costigan) is assigned to gain the confidence of a head gang member (costello) .Also another character (sullivan), has been working with another agency to pass information to the law enforcement also about costello. Both men become largely consumed by their double lives with the amount of double plans they are making, however Sullivan informs multiple cops their may be a rat even though it turned out to him, this then means both men have to try and expose the identity of the other to save themselves to get out of the risk of being exposed and captured by the enemy. The film finishes by Costigan  trying to persuade the cops that sullivan is the one working with the criminal costello (and he was) and a cop shoots costigan.  Dignam who worked with costigan seeks revenge and kills sullivan.

The Thriller codes and conventions used are:
  • The actors and film company name is the first in the titles
  • extreme close ups to show emotion and actors facial expressions
  • Loud non diegetic music played throughout most action scenes to create a sound bridge for a curtain atmosphere.
  •  facial expressions and body language also builds up mystery and tension,
  • Low angle shots to show fear and high angle shots to show who is superior and in control.
  • The Antagonist lies
  • The main characters are the protagonist and the Antagonist
  • location well known
  • tracking and pan camera movements are used, due to the speed of the action and music it implys something is about to happen which makes the viewer nervous and tense
  • Fast cuts are used create more drama
  • dark lighting and shadows used for the action scenes as this sets the scene
  • Guns are used and the sound of the trigger to create suspension and uncertainty

RESEARCH - structures of film openings

There are 3 main types of film openings ,

- Narrative structure is when the opening titles are  super imposed or inter cut into a scene making it look like its actually part of the movie , The movie 'Panic room' is a prime example of this .

- Discrete sequence is when the titles include random images or footage which are from random part in the movie . It is not part of the narrative and does not give much away . The film 'se7en' is an example as the opening credits run over the top of random images .

-Titles over a blank screen is when the opening tiles stand alone and run over a blank screen which is then folllowed by the narrative .This will have no relation what so ever to the storyline. 'Donnie Darko ' is an example of this .

Stylised Editing is when there are many different uses of media techniques . Its very time cocnsuming but creates an effective opening. Its begins descrete then leading into an narrative opening .'The taking of Pelham 123 ' begins in New York where the credits are super imposed then continue to a narrative opening.

RESEARCH- structures of film openings

There are 3 types of Structure which a film opening could follow.

The first opening structure is a narrative opening.
A narrative opening is when the titles run throughout and are either super imposed or inter cut to the scene. The film 'The Shining' is an example of a narrative opening as the credits scroll from the bottom of the screen to the top.

The second opening structure is a discrete title sequence.
A discrete title sequence includes separate segments which are from random points within the film, but does not indicate the plot or give to much away and is not part of the narrative. 'Seven' is an example of this as the credits run over random segments.

The third opening structure is titles over a blank screen, followed by the narrative opening.
This means the credits stand alone and run generally over a black screen, they have no relation with the narrative  which then leads to the opening of the film. An example of this is 'Donnie Darko'

Stylized Editing
Stylized Editing begins discrete but continues slowly and eventually into the opening narrative of the film. An example of this is The taking of Pelham 1 2 3. The credits begin super imposed onto the scenes of skylines of New York then continue to the opening narrative.

RESEARCH- Intertextuality

Interextuality is when the shaping of a media texts (films, novels, songs) have similar properties to another by referencing another text.
Remakes of films generally refer directly to a specific text which the audience can interpret due to their prior knowledge of others. For example films may re create a similar scene from others using  similar editing styles, camera techniques and by using similar diegectic/non diegetic sound.

Alfred Hitchcocks film 'Physco' includes the famous shower scene which has had aspects and techniques borrowed on countless occasions. These include the films 'Fatal attraction', 'The Stepfather' and 'What Lies Beneath'.

We can see the Intertextuality which has been used in Fatal attraction from the original film physco. The most obvious similarity is the ending of the scenes when both victims of murder have become weaker and lean against the bath tiles and fall. The water from the tap continues through to the ending of the scene in fatal attraction which is similar to the constant flow of the shower in physco. The sound in fatal attraction is also similar as it has a steady tone throughout until the women is dying and the non diegetic sound fades to silence, this is like in physco when the non diegetic sound also fades out and their is nothing but running water to show the women is dead. The two have fast paced editing when the action is present and extreme close ups of the women when they are dying.

-Stanley Kubricks 'The shining' used this image which was captured by Diana Arbus as inspiration for one of his most famous scenes within the film. The twins in the film look very similar to those in the photograph, the matching hairstyles and clothing. The camera angle used is also similar and creates uncertainty as although they appear as harmless little girls the manner and tone of their voices say otherwise.

By using Intertextuality for our own film opening should mean it would be a realistic thriller opening and would include all the codes and conventions needed for a successful opening.

RESEARCH-Film Audiences/target audiences

Films have a specific target audience to appeal to a curtain audience and give a more prominent idea on what the content of the film will include.

The general certificate for Thrillers today is a 15, although the main age years ago was an 18 it shows that standards within society are dropping on what is acceptable to be shown. The girl with the dragon tattoo is a 15,    even though she gets brutally raped. However Blue valentine is an 18 due to one scene where a man is orally pleasuring a women, as society would see this as unusual it was rated an 18.

The average Thriller includes violence and psychological issues which can be disturbing, the main target audience for a thriller depends on the content and sub genre of it, Passion thrillers appeal to a more feminine older audience, action thrillers appeal to a younger audience and crime thrillers appeal to an older audience.

The Dark Knight Rises would appeal to a wide audience due to the fact it is a trilogy of batman and the first batman comic was released in 1940. However generally the main audience would be young adults/older teenagers, this is due to the action and thrill the movie includes. Also the audience may be able to relate with the characters in some way, whether they aspire to be a hero like batman or one of the other characters, the movie would be relateable too most viewers.

Other Genres attract other target audiences;

Animated- younger audiences
sci-fi- male young adults
Comedy- wide range
Romance- mid-older women

However this is just my general opinion, sub-genres also play apart in the target audience of a specific film.

RESEARCH - Intertextuality .

The meaning of Intertextuality means describing a visual referencing between films, when films have similar properties to each other.
Some films tend to 'borrow' from other films, such as camera angles ,aspects of mise en scene or sounds and editing .

In Alfred Hitchcock's film  'Psycho'  , There is a famous shower scene which many movies have borrows aspects from , such as 'The stepfather'. In 'The stepfather' a man has been stabbed in the bathroom and falls leading to the shower curtains coming down . In psycho as the lady is being stabbed she falls into the shower curtains and the curtains come of the hook .  In 'Pyscho' there is also a close up of the ladies feet once she is dead , that the film 'Fatal attraction' borrowed as there is also a close up of the feet .Also when Alexander is struggling to breathe she runs to the kitchen sink and turns on the tap . Non- digestic sound clips are used to add emphasis within the clip and has been taken from psycho .Other intertexuality elements are the shiny knife, white lighting , close up of facial expressions and the fast music. In one of the students remake called 'succubus ' The whole shower scene , the stabbing repeatedly and the close up of the feet have all been borrowed from ' Psycho '.

As the majority of these films have been a success , the use of intertexuality could be a great benifit as it would be a more realistic thriller .We will be able to use some key conventions to make it the best opening possible.

RESEARCH-Film Audiences - target audiences

All films are composed specifically to a certain type of audience it's targeting . This is important as it will identify what sort of content , an advantage to targeting a specific audience would be the fact that it can be tailor made , meaning the producers do not need to worry about a wider target audience .However a disadvantage in this would be that it wouldn't make as much money .

Different genres attract different audiences , eg :
  • comedy would have a wide range
  • sci-fie would be aimed at young male adults
  • Romance would targetteenage girls and women in general
  • Animated would be set for children

The target audience for a generic thriller movie would be the ages of 15 - 25 , However the standards of what is allowed to be seen by a certain age group has dropped as before , thrillers would be an 18. On the other hand most thriller audiences depend on the sub genres , For example thrillers border lining horrors such as ' the sixth sense ' and 'the village' would be aimed at teenager girls ,  younger and more female based ,where as thrillers such as 'se7en ' and ' memento ' are targeted at more mature audiences

The movie Se7en is rated 15 due to the fact it contains strong language , hardcore violence (murders ) and sex & nudity.

Most target audience for thrillers would be people who are intrigued in mystery ,crime ,  twists and turns .They want to be able to work things out for themselves . Never the less sub-genres play a massive part in the type of audience .
