RESEARCH- The structure of thriller openings

There are 3 types basic structures of thriller openings:

Discrete openings- These openings are very unclear and don't really give anything away about the film. These type openings may contain elements which act as indicators towards the plot. An example of a film which uses a discrete opening is Se7en. As showed in the clip, Se7en uses mysterious music and props e.g. books to open the film and doesn't give the films narrative away.

Narrative openings- These are openings which show the first part of the film e.g. introduces characters and could also give the audience and idea to what the plot may be. For example, in Panic Room, after the shots of the buildings along with the credits have been shown, the story of the film actually begins as the characters, location etc have been established. This clip only shows this in the last 5 seconds or so.

Titles over a blank screen- These openings contain stand alone titles that lead into the opening of the film, they are usually on a black screen with white writing. An example of this is Donnie Darko. Donnie Darko has a mysterious opening but before this it has simple credits over a black screen.
