RESEARCH-Analysis of students film opening (catechize)

The opening structure to Catechize is quite discrete. Throughout the sequence it contains separate segments which are random and don't contribute to the narrative. I thought this student opening was very similar to 'Se7en' in terms of the editing, lighting and imagery. Overall the opening created large amounts of suspense and tension especially with the different effects of imagery used.

Camera- In terms of camera shots most of them were just

of still images. However the shots that were identifiable
were mostly close ups and a crab shot of some tools. in
general most of the camera shots consist of about 3 seconds.
The shot of this eye adds to the unnerving atmosphere as it
may perceieves the sense of being watched.
Sound- No music is played throughout however
non diegetic sound can be heard through the flicking of
pages along with the heartbeat at the beginning and the

dripping of water, this creates suspension.

The lighting throughout is quite dull and dark which

contributes to overall atmosphere, it gives the
impression of isolation and loneliness.
Props are used such as a clock Polaroid photographs.

In terms of editing it consists of a lot of fast cuts and
flashing imagery this connotes danger and fear.
